Job Summary

The Project Manager will be responsible for coordinating both research and standard project activities (self-help group mobilization, training etc.) and will also need to effectively engage with project partners both internal and external to Hand in Hand.

Job Description
The Project Manager will lead the project team, and ensuring the successful implementation of all project activities, according to agreed targets and in line with current budgets. The Project Manager will be responsible for coordinating both research and standard project activities (self-help group mobilization, training etc.) and will also need to effectively engage with project partners both internal and external to Hand in Hand.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Contribute to development of the corporate strategic plan and spearhead implementation of the aspects that relate to the project.
- Manage implementation of operational plans, work plans, activities and deliverables as well as performance guidelines for the project. Periodically review plans and refresh objectives as needed.
- Support preparation and use of the budgets, and monitor and control budgets for the project.
- Represent HIH EA (TZ) to external stakeholders relevant to the project.
- Lead the implementation of the project’s activities in close collaboration with the MEL Manager.
- Coordinate both the operational and research activities, and provide support to ICRW with their research activities.
- Lead on area survey, routing, community outreach and buy-in/mobilization, and flagging off of the project areas that are assigned.
- Lead on training activities for the project’s male members on gender.
- Coordinate activities for meeting and engaging with local leaders and stakeholders in the respective areas of project operation.
- Undertake field visits for supervision and support of the respective projects
- Make recommendations on innovations and creation of products and services that would fit specific areas and members based on need analysis.
- Participate in human resource training and capacity building for staff.
- Support in the development of proposals for resource mobilization and fundraising
- Track project activities and expenditures and provide periodic input to management on performance against established benchmarks.
- Ensure compliance with legal and donor requirements, organization’s policies and standard operating procedures, and maintain established quality standards.
- Support monitoring and evaluation activities for the project, in cooperation with the MEL Manager. Ensure data collected is accurate and follows protocols for this particular project.
- Adopt and use monitoring systems in tracking and reporting on activities and results realized in the implementation of project activities. Analyze on-going implementation data to understand where the project may be falling behind or any gaps in implementation.
- Spearhead adoption of monitoring and evaluation findings and recommendations for the project.
- Prepare and submit periodic and ad-hoc narrative and financial reports for management, donors and other relevant audiences within established timelines.
- Act as a key point of contact between HIHEA in Nairobi, ICRW in Tanzania and in the US, and with HIHI in London, and ensure smooth cooperation between the partners.
- Facilitate effective and impactful field visits for donors, partners and other stakeholders.
- Participate in relevant forums (such as government, community and other stakeholder) whenever nominated.
- Maintain good public relations and promote visibility of HiH EA’s work within project areas and branches.
- Offer leadership to the staff and foster teamwork and address and resolve conflicts/ issues affecting the team in a timely manner.
- Conduct appraisal for supervised staff.
- Work effectively with internationally based teams
Job Specifications
- University degree in any of the following disciplines: Project Management, Business Administration/Management, Economics, Social Sciences, Gender Studies or any related discipline.
- At least 3 years’ experience in a similar position.
- Strong experience within a similar position or with demonstrable leadership experience in the management and implementation of complex projects, preferably research projects implemented by national/international NGOs/governments.
- Experience of managing community based training programs.
- Extensive experience in working with gender programming and community-based implementation approaches.
- Proven experience in delivering or facilitating training.
- Experience of working with internationally based teams and for donor funded programs.
- Experience of producing donor narrative reports
- Excellent project management skills demonstrated by a minimum of 3 years’ experience supporting development projects, ideally supporting self-help groups or enterprise programs. Demonstrable ability to coordinate field activities and the ability to lead and drive work streams from initiation to completion.
- A solid understanding of basic reporting and monitoring systems used in international development programs.
- Self-starter with an excellent ability to work autonomously to identify and serve needs with minimal supervision.
- Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks by establishing priorities.
- Strong conceptual and practical understanding of peri-urban and rural development and experience in working with marginalized communities in Tanzania.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to establish, build and maintain effective working relationships with staff, partners and community stakeholders and members.
- Proven leadership and management ability, motivation and keenness in developing self and others.
- Strong performance drive, initiative and commitment to individual and team results.
- Positive attitude and high level of integrity.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written, in English and Kiswahili.
- Proficiency in use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Strong attention to details, analytical skills and report writing skills.
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Swahili.
- Understanding of other local languages, a plus.
