Organisational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Chambers Legal Support Section of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism) (Arusha Branch). The P-3 Legal Officer will work under the direction of the assigned Judge(s) and under the supervision of (Senior) Legal Officers.
Responsibilities
- Perform and supervise legal research and analysis of issues of international criminal law and procedure, international humanitarian law and human rights law, and provide specialized legal advice, both written and oral; supervise the preparation of draft memoranda and other legal documents; provide leadership to teams that assist Judges at all levels of proceedings; provide legal support to (Senior) Legal Officers and Judges; undertake legal analysis of submissions and evidence; maintain files on the Mechanism's practice and jurisprudential developments and monitor relevant developments in international law.

Education
Advanced university degree in law, preferably with specialization in international, criminal law and/or humanitarian law. A first level university degree in law in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
Work Experience
Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible professional legal experience, at either the national or international level, with an emphasis in criminal law, international law or humanitarian law. Previous experience in one of the ad hoc Tribunals is highly desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the Mechanism. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English or French is required. Working knowledge of the other is highly desirable.
Assessment
There may be a technical test followed by a competency-based interview.
Special Notice
The appointment is limited to the Mechanism. Appointment of the successful candidate on this position will be limited to the initial funding of the post. Extension of the appointment is subject to the extension of the mandate and/or the availability of funds. As the Mechanism is not integrated in the Secretariat, UN Staff Members serve on assignment or secondment from their parent department/office if selected. Appointments of staff members in the United Nations are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General. Staff Members are expected to move periodically to new functions in accordance with established rules and procedures, and may in this context be reassigned by the Secretary-General throughout the Organization based on the changing needs and mandates.
